Summer Mountain Mini Sessions are here! Join Nicola Jane Photography at Mount Falcon West for beautiful Colorado family photos. Limited June, July, and August dates available.
If you've been waiting for the perfect time to update your family photos, summer in Colorado is hard to beat.
The mountains are lush and green, the evenings are warm, and the golden sunlight creates the most beautiful backdrop for family portraits. It's one of my favorite times of year to photograph families because everything feels relaxed. School is out, schedules are a little slower, and families can focus on simply being together.
One question I hear all the time is:
"Do you offer family sessions?"
The answer is yes—and this summer I'm excited to offer a limited number of Summer Mountain Mini Sessions at Mount Falcon West.
What Are Summer Mountain Mini Sessions?
Mini sessions are designed for families who want updated photos without committing to a full-length portrait session.
These sessions are short, simple, and stress-free while still providing beautiful images you'll love displaying in your home.
Each session includes:
25-minute session
15 digital images
Immediate family only
Beautiful mountain scenery at Mount Falcon West
$600
After your session, I will carefully select the best images from your gallery. If your session includes more than 15 images, you'll receive an online gallery where you can choose your 15 favorite photographs. You'll also have the option to purchase additional digital images, with collections available for $35 per image, $150 for 5 images, or $250 for 10 images.
Why Mount Falcon West?
Mount Falcon West is one of my favorite Colorado locations for family photography.
Located just outside Denver, it offers stunning mountain views, open spaces, beautiful trails, and incredible evening light. The scenery feels distinctly Colorado without requiring a long mountain drive.
Whether your children are toddlers, school-aged, or teenagers, the location provides plenty of space to move, explore, and create natural, authentic moments.
The result is a gallery that feels relaxed, connected, and timeless.
2026 Summer Mini Session Dates
I will be offering one mini-session weekend each month this summer:
June 13–14
July 11–12
August 22–23
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if it rains?
Colorado weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains. If weather conditions are unsafe or the forecast calls for significant rain, a backup date will be provided. I will always communicate any changes as early as possible.
Who can participate in a mini session?
These sessions are reserved for immediate family members only. Mini sessions are designed to be quick and efficient, allowing me to accommodate multiple families throughout the day.
What should we wear?
The best place to start is with the most difficult person to dress—whether that's your husband, your teenager, or a child with strong clothing preferences. Once you've chosen their outfit, coordinate everyone else's clothing around it.
The goal is to coordinate, not match. Choose colors that complement each other and the natural mountain scenery rather than putting everyone in identical outfits. Neutral tones, soft earth colors, and subtle textures tend to photograph beautifully at Mount Falcon.
How long is the session?
Mini sessions are a maximum of 25 minutes. Please plan to arrive early, as sessions begin promptly at their scheduled time.
Because multiple families are scheduled throughout the evening, late arrivals will only receive the remaining time in their allotted mini-session. Unfortunately, I cannot extend sessions due to delays, so arriving a few minutes early helps ensure you get the full experience.
Can we bring our dog?
Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join your family session. Please let me know ahead of time if you plan to bring your pup so we can plan accordingly.
What if my kids don't cooperate?
Please don't stress about this. Truly.
Children don't need to sit still and smile at the camera for the entire session. Some of the best photographs come from the in-between moments—the cuddles, giggles, exploring, and genuine interactions that happen naturally. My goal is to make the experience fun and relaxed so we can capture your family just as you are.
Don't Wait Too Long
Colorado summers always seem to fly by.
One minute you're planning summer activities, and the next you're shopping for back-to-school supplies.
The little things change so quickly—the missing teeth, the way your child reaches for your hand, the laughter, the cuddles, and all of the small moments that make this season uniquely yours.
These Summer Mountain Mini Sessions are an opportunity to preserve those memories while surrounded by some of Colorado's most beautiful scenery.
If you've been thinking about updating your family photos, I'd love to help you capture this season before it's gone.

“I Want Newborn Photos… But…” - Newborn Photographer, Parker, CO.
The Real Concerns Moms Have Before Booking a Newborn Session
If I’m being completely honest… most moms who inquire about newborn photos are excited and nervous at the exact same time.
And it’s usually not because they don’t want the pictures.
It’s because they’re worried about everything surrounding them.
“What if my baby cries the whole time?”
“What if they won’t sleep?”
“What if I waited too long?”
“What if I’m overwhelmed?”
“What if my baby was premature?”
“What if newborn posing isn’t safe?”
These are real concerns. And honestly? They’re valid.
That’s exactly why I created my “I Want Newborn Photos… But…” series on social media — because I wanted moms to know they are not alone in these thoughts.
So let’s talk about some of the biggest worries I hear from parents before booking a newborn session.
“They’re Expensive.”
Newborn photos are an investment, and I completely understand why that can feel hard to justify when you’re already spending so much preparing for a baby.
But most things we buy for our babies are temporary. The clothes get packed away. The bassinets, swings, and little gadgets eventually disappear.
These photos become more meaningful with time.
Because one day, your tiny newborn won’t be tiny anymore. And these images become one of the only ways to truly go back and remember exactly how this time felt.
This is the beginning of their story. And one day, these photos will mean everything.
“What If My Baby Doesn’t Cooperate?”
This is probably one of the most common fears moms have before their session.
They imagine a perfectly sleepy newborn who curls effortlessly into every pose they’ve seen online… and then look at their own baby who hates being put down, fights sleep, or seems determined to stay awake forever.
Here’s the thing:
Awake babies are not bad babies.
Fussy babies are not ruined sessions.
“Stubborn” babies still create beautiful images.
Every baby already has a personality — even at just days or weeks old.
Some babies love being curled up and sleepy.
Some babies want to stretch out and observe everything around them.
Some need extra cuddles, extra feeding breaks, or a slower pace.
That’s normal.
Your session is never about forcing your baby into something they hate. It’s about gently working with who they are.
And honestly? Some of the most meaningful images come from those little in-between moments.
“I’m Overwhelmed.”
New motherhood is a lot.
You’re exhausted. Recovering. Emotional. Learning your baby. Trying to function on very little sleep while somehow remembering to feed yourself and answer text messages.
So when moms think about planning a newborn session, sometimes it feels impossible to add one more thing to the list.
That’s why I’ve intentionally created my studio experience to feel calm, easy, and fully taken care of.
My Parker studio is fully stocked with wraps, outfits, props, snacks, drinks, sibling toys, Wi-Fi, and everything we need for your session.
You do not need to arrive “put together.”
You do not need to stress about bringing everything.
You do not need to know how to pose your baby.
Just come as you are.
My goal is for your session to feel calm, relaxed, and effortless from the moment you walk through the door.
“I Think I Waited Too Long.”
This one breaks my heart a little because so many parents think they completely “missed their chance.”
Yes — those super curly, extra sleepy poses are usually easiest within the first couple of weeks after birth.
But that does not mean beautiful newborn photos can’t happen later.
Babies are still considered “newborns” up to around six weeks old, and even beyond that, there are still so many beautiful ways to document this chapter.
Older newborn sessions may simply look a little different.
Your baby may be more awake.
More expressive.
More stretched out.
Less curly.
And that’s okay.
Because this stage still matters.
Your baby is changing every single day, and it is never too late to preserve this chapter of their life.
“I’m Nervous About Newborn Posing.”
Honestly, this concern is important.
There are a lot of photographers entering the newborn space right now. Some are highly trained. Some… are not.
Your baby’s safety should always come first.
Always.
I have over 10 years of newborn experience, and I will never compromise safety to get “the shot.”
Every pose is done gently, safely, and only if baby is naturally comfortable.
If a baby dislikes a pose? We move on.
If something doesn’t feel safe? We don’t do it.
If baby needs breaks? We take them.
Simple as that.
A calm, safe, baby-led session is always the priority in my studio.
“My Baby Was Premature.”
One of the most emotional responses I received in this series came from a mama who said:
“My baby doesn’t look like those chunky newborns online.”
And I know there are so many NICU and preemie parents who feel this way.
Every premature baby journey is different.
Sometimes newborn photos happen right away.
Sometimes they need to wait.
Sometimes baby is still on oxygen or under medical guidance.
Sometimes your “newborn session” happens at three months old.
And guess what?
That story still deserves to be documented.
Tiny babies.
NICU babies.
Three-month-old “newborns.”
Their story matters too.
The most important thing is finding the safest timing for your baby, and that’s why I always encourage parents to simply reach out and start the conversation.
You never need to feel embarrassed or unsure about asking.
You Are Not Alone
If there’s one thing I hope moms take away from this series, it’s this:
You do not need the “perfect” baby, perfect timeline, or perfect postpartum experience to deserve beautiful memories.
Your story matters exactly as it is.
And years from now, you won’t remember whether your baby slept perfectly or whether you felt fully put together that day.
You’ll remember how tiny they were.
How they fit in your arms.
How quickly this chapter passed.
And you’ll be so grateful you preserved it.
If you’ve been thinking “I want newborn photos… but…” — I’d love to hear your concern too. Chances are, another mama is feeling the exact same way. 🤍
“Is It Worth Doing Maternity Photos… Even If I’m Not Sure I Want Them?”
If you’re pregnant and thinking about maternity photos — but you’re not totally sold on the idea — you’re not alone.
A lot of parents-to-be hesitate for perfectly real, human reasons:
“I don’t feel like myself right now.”
“I feel big and awkward — what if I don’t look good?”
“I’m already pretty far along… is it too late?”
“What would I even wear?”
“Do I really need maternity photos?”
If you’ve had even one of those thoughts, this post is for you ❤️
Let’s talk honestly about maternity photography — what it can be, what it doesn’t have to be, and how to make it feel comfortable, natural, and totally you.
“Between baby expenses and life… can I actually afford this?”
If you’ve had even one of those thoughts, this post is for you ❤️
Let’s talk honestly about maternity photography — what it can be, what it doesn’t have to be, and how to make it feel comfortable, natural, and totally you.
First — You’re Allowed to Feel Unsure
Pregnancy is emotional. Your body is changing, your brain is full of a million to-dos, and the idea of stepping in front of a camera can feel… intimidating.
Here’s the truth:
Maternity photos are not about perfection. They’re about preserving a moment in time you can’t get back — the season when your baby was still safely tucked inside you.
You don’t need to:
feel glamorous
know how to pose
love every change your body is going through
That’s my job — I guide, pose, flatter, support, and create a space where you can simply be.
Most parents who were once unsure tell me afterward:
“I almost didn’t do this… and now I’m so glad I did.”
“But… What If I Don’t Feel Beautiful Right Now?”
That’s a totally valid feeling! But also — you might be seeing yourself through the lens of discomfort, not reality!
With thoughtful posing, soft light, beautiful fabrics, and angles that celebrate your shape — the bump becomes art, not something you’re trying to hide.
I specialize in:
gentle, flattering posing
natural connection rather than stiff “smile at the camera” shots
creating images where you look strong, serene, and deeply maternal
This isn’t about looking like a model. It’s about honoring the incredible work your body is doing.
“What Would I Even Wear?” (Good news — you don’t have to worry.)
If wardrobe stress is stopping you — breathe. I’ve already solved that part 🫶
I have a curated client closet full of beautiful maternity dresses, draped fabrics, cozy knits, and classic silhouettes designed to flatter growing bumps.
You can choose a look that feels like your vibe and you’re also welcome to bring your own! I don’t try to force any particular style on you because we want the pictures to be something that feels right for YOU!
Studio Session vs Outdoor Session — Which One’s Right for You?
Both options are beautiful… they just tell different stories.
Studio Maternity Session
Perfect if you want:
a calm, private, controlled environment
soft, timeless, artistic images
flexibility with lighting and wardrobe
comfort (temperature, seating, breaks — everything is right there)
Studio sessions can be minimalist, dreamy, dramatic, or simple and natural. They’re great for anyone who feels shy about being photographed in public.
Outdoor Maternity Session
Perfect if you want:
natural light + scenic backgrounds
movement, breeze, sunshine, golden hour glow
a storytelling, “this is our life right now” feel
Outdoor photos feel organic and emotionally rich — especially with partners or little ones included. They’re wonderful if you love connection and movement in your images.
“Is It Too Late to Book?” (Probably not.)
Ideally, maternity photos happen around 30–34 weeks, when:
the bump is beautifully rounded
you’re still comfortable enough to move and pose
But life doesn’t always follow the perfect schedule — and that’s okay.
I regularly photograph:
earlier bumps
later-stage pregnancies
“we almost skipped this but changed our mind!” sessions
If a maternity session matters to you, I will make it work!
“Between baby expenses and life… can I actually afford this?”
That’s such a real question — and the good news is, a maternity session doesn’t have to feel like a huge splurge. With me, it can be simple, meaningful, and totally achievable. Here are the perks:
💛 The session fee is just $150 (truly a steal for a full, guided maternity experience).
📸 You also receive three complimentary images — so you’re already walking away with beautiful portraits, even before choosing anything additional.
🫶 Many families treat their maternity session as an “interview” to see how we connect before booking newborn photos.
🪄 If you choose an in-studio session, you also get a peek at my fully stocked newborn studio — props, wraps, outfits, sample images — everything ready for baby’s big day.
So… Is It Worth It?
Only you can answer that, but here’s what I see, time and time again - people don’t regret taking maternity photos. They regret not taking them.
These images become:
the first page of your baby’s story
the proof of the incredible thing you and your body are doing right now
the way your child someday sees how loved they were before they were even born
And years from now, when pregnancy feels like a blur — you’ll have something tangible to remember it by.
If You’re Thinking About It… Let’s Talk!
If you’re on the fence, you don’t have to decide right this second. Reach out, ask questions, and tell me your worries — I’m happy to talk through anything!
Whether we create something cozy and simple… or bold and artistic… my goal is the same - to help you feel comfortable, seen, and beautifully documented in this fleeting season.
Why Do Photographers Charge “So Much” for Digital Images? - Denver Newborn Photographer
If you’ve ever looked at a price list and thought:
“Wait… it’s how much for a digital file?
But it’s just a JPEG… right?!”
You’re not alone.
This is one of the most common questions photographers get, and honestly, it’s a fair one. On the surface, a digital file feels like it should cost about as much as a venti latte and a muffin.
So let’s pull back the curtain a bit. I’m going to walk you through:
What you’re actually paying for when you buy digital images
Why digitals are often priced higher than prints
And why you can’t buy just a print without the digital image.
Grab a drink and settle in—this is the nerdy, honest deep dive photographers wish every client could read.
First Big Truth: You’re Not Paying for the File
A lot of photographers describe it this way:
You’re not paying for the file… you’re paying for everything it took to create that file, plus the value it holds for you over time.
When you buy a digital image, you’re not just buying “one picture.” You’re buying the master file that can be turned into prints, albums, wall art, cards, gifts and more—over and over again, for years. That’s why many photographers price digital files based on their value and the potential to create lots of products from them, not on what it costs to send an email.
Think of it like buying the recipe and lifetime rights to make your favorite cake at home, instead of just buying a single slice at the bakery.
What Actually Goes Into One Finished Digital Image?
Let’s zoom out and look at the whole journey of a photograph, especially for something like a newborn session.
1. Before You Even Walk in the Door
There’s a whole invisible layer of work that happens before the camera comes out:
Emailing, messaging, scheduling, contracts, and planning
Styling and prep (choosing wraps, outfits, props, backdrops)
Studio rent, utilities, cleaning, heat/AC, insurance
Business tools: booking systems, galleries, editing software, website, etc.
Those costs exist whether the photographer shoots one session a month or ten.
2. The Session Itself
For newborns, it’s not a quick 20-minute “snap and go.”
2–3+ hours of careful posing, settling, feeding breaks, safety checks
Experience and training to handle and pose babies safely
Assistants, if used, to keep everything smooth and secure
Custom sets, props, outfits that the photographer has invested in over time
That’s a lot of hands-on, focused time that doesn’t show up in “just a file.”
3. Culling & Editing (aka The Rabbit Hole of Time)
After you leave, the real work begins.
A single session can easily involve hundreds of frames. A photographer has to:
Import and back up all the images
Go through and select the best ones (culling)
Hand-edit each chosen image: color, exposure, skin tones, background cleanup, stray hairs, blemishes, distractions, and so on
The goal isn’t “good enough for Instagram.” It’s good enough to hang on your wall for 20 years.
4. Delivery, Backup & Archiving
Then there’s:
Exporting images in the right sizes and formats and color space
Uploading to an online gallery service (which the photographer pays for)
Long-term storage and backups (multiple drives, cloud storage, etc.)
All of this is baked into what you’re paying for when you buy digitals.
So… Why Are Digital Images Often More Expensive Than Prints?
This is where things really mess with people’s heads:
“An 8×10 print is $X… but the digital is more than that?
That makes no sense!”
Totally understandable reaction. Here’s what’s going on.
1. The Digital File Is the “Master”
When you buy a print, you’re buying one physical thing.
When you buy a digital, you’re buying the ability to:
Print it as many times as you want
Make canvases, albums, cards, gifts
Share it online, use it as your screensaver, keep it forever
Because that one file can generate many products over its lifetime, photographers price digitals according to that long-term value, not just the cost of sending it over email.
2. It Replaces Future Product Income
Traditionally, photographers made most of their income from selling prints and products. The session fee covered a small portion; the majority of profit came when clients ordered wall art, albums, and gift prints.
When a photographer gives you high-resolution digitals with a print release, they’re effectively handing you the whole store:
You can print elsewhere
You can reorder as much as you want
You may never need to buy another product from them
So the digital price has to reflect the reality that it’s replacing those future sales.
What You’re Really Buying From a Photographer (Beyond Pixels)
When you hire someone for newborn, family, or milestone photos, you’re also paying for:
Years of training & practice – knowing how to pose, light, and flatter every body and every baby.
Safety & expertise – especially for newborns, where posing and handling require real knowledge, not just “winging it.”
Artistic style – that consistent, beautiful look you fell in love with on their website doesn’t happen by accident.
The full experience – a stocked studio, curated props and outfits, a calm space where you can just relax and enjoy while someone else handles the details.
Reliability – backups, contracts, systems, and a business that will still exist when you need them in a few years for your next milestone.
The digital image is the deliverable.
The service, skill, and care behind it are the real product!
“Why Can’t I Just Buy Prints Without the Digital File?”
This is another totally reasonable question — and the answer comes down to the process of how a finished photograph is made.
Think of it like baking a cake.
Before I can give you a slice (the print), I first have to bake the whole cake (the edited digital image). The cake doesn’t come ready-made — I have to measure, mix, bake, and decorate it first.
It’s the same with photography. A photo doesn’t come out of the camera ready to print. I still have to:
Choose the best shot
Fully edit it so colors, skin tones, and details look right
Prepare the file for the print lab
Once that work is done, the edited digital image already exists — that’s the final, finished piece of artwork everything is created from.
In other words:
👉 A print can’t exist without first creating the edited digital file.
It’s not about forcing people to buy more — it’s that the real effort is in “baking the cake,” not just slicing the piece.
Final Thoughts
Photographers don’t price digital images highly because they’re “just files.” They price them that way because those files are:
carefully crafted artwork
created through hours of skilled labor
preserved as long-term, printable master files
and capable of becoming lifelong heirlooms for your family
If digital images have ever felt overpriced or confusing, I hope this pulled back the curtain a little. They may look like “just files,” but they carry memories, stories, and moments you’ll never get back — and that’s where their real value lives.
Senior Session Spotlight: From Nature to Downtown Parker — Before the Rain Came!
There’s something about senior sessions that always makes me smile. They’re full of energy, confidence, and a quiet excitement for the adventures ahead.
We started this session outdoors — surrounded by trees, tall grass, and that warm Colorado glow. The natural tones were the perfect backdrop to highlight his calm, grounded personality. Every pose felt effortless — leaning against the tree, sitting in the grass, taking in the quiet before senior year really takes off.
“Senior portraits aren’t just pictures — they’re a celebration of who you are right now.”
As we worked through poses, his confidence just shone. You could tell he’s ready for what’s next — whether it’s college, adventures, or just soaking up that last bit of high school life.
Next, we switched things up with a totally different vibe — clean lines, textures, and a pop of personality with his Braves jersey. These shots on the bridge and stairs gave us a mix of grit and charm, perfectly matching his style.
Downtown Parker never disappoints — from brick walls to cozy storefronts, it’s one of my favorite places to finish a senior session. We laughed, wandered, and made the most of every corner… until the rain came! 🌧️
And honestly? The light drizzle just added to the story — a fun, spontaneous ending to an already amazing session.
Final Thoughts
Senior sessions are about more than the perfect pose — they’re about capturing you: your energy, your confidence, and the chapter you’re about to write.
Whether you’re drawn to nature, architecture, or a little of both, we’ll build a session that fits your style perfectly.

What kind of Newborn Photography is right for me?! A guide to finding the perfect style to capture those early days | Newborn Photographer, Parker, CO.
When I had my babies, newborn photography basically meant a quick hospital snap—harsh lighting, stiff poses, and maybe a sticker that said “It’s a Girl!” if you were lucky. These days? You’re spoiled for choice—and I couldn’t be happier for today’s new parents! There are now so many beautiful ways to preserve those first fleeting moments with your baby, each offering something totally unique.
So how do you know which style of newborn photography is right for you?
Let’s break it down.
💛 Birth Photography
What it is: A professional photographer present during labor and delivery to document the full birth story—from the intensity of contractions to the first breath, first cry, and that raw rush of love.
Why parents love it: It's incredibly powerful and emotional. You’ll see your own strength, your partner’s support, and your baby’s very first moments on Earth. These sessions are raw, documentary-style, and completely unscripted.
Good to know: Not every hospital allows photographers in the delivery room, so it’s important to check policies ahead of time. Also, this is usually for those very comfortable being photographed in a highly personal setting.
📷 Fresh 48 Sessions
What it is: A short session within the first 48 hours of baby’s life—usually at the hospital, birth center, or even at home. These sessions are natural and candid, capturing baby’s brand-newness.
Why parents love it: It’s a sweet way to document the little hospital bracelets, wrinkled toes, first yawns, and sleepy snuggles—without the unpredictability of photographing the full birth.
Good to know: Fresh 48s are minimally posed, and often include parents, siblings, or even grandparents visiting the baby for the first time.
🏡 Lifestyle Newborn Photography
What it is: A casual, at-home session focusing on the connection between family members in their natural environment.
Why parents love it: These images feel relaxed and authentic—your baby in their own nursery, your dog curled up nearby, siblings climbing into your lap mid-photo. It’s about love and chaos and home.
Good to know: There’s less posing and styling here. It’s more about storytelling than set-ups.
🏥 Hospital/Newborn Portraits
What it is: Often offered through larger hospital chains, these are quick photo sessions taken during your hospital stay.
Why parents love it: Convenience. It’s a no-fuss way to get at least some professional photos before heading home.
Good to know: Lighting and styling can be limited, and these are often more basic in terms of editing and creativity.
🎀 POSED Newborn Sessions (What I Do!)
This is where my heart lives—and where your baby becomes a work of art.
What it is: A highly stylized session, typically done in the first 5–14 days of life when baby is still sleepy and naturally curled. I gently and safely pose your newborn using soft wraps, beautiful props, curated backdrops, and carefully crafted lighting to create timeless, dreamy images. The ones that make you gasp when you see them.
Why I love it: Because posed newborn photography transforms a fleeting moment into fine art. It celebrates your baby’s perfect features, sleepy snuggles, tiny fingers and toes—presented in a way that feels luxurious, creative, and custom to your family. Every single detail is intentionally designed.
Why parents love it:
You don’t have to bring a thing. My studio is fully stocked with wraps, hats, headbands, bonnets, buckets, backgrounds, and more.
It’s a calm, baby-led experience. I follow baby’s cues, take plenty of breaks, and ensure everyone feels relaxed.
You walk away with heirloom-quality artwork. Not just a few phone snaps, but portraits worthy of your walls and albums your child will one day treasure.
Safety is my top priority. I’m trained in newborn safety (including infant CPR), and every pose is done with intention and care. Many poses, like the famous “froggy pose,” are even done as composites to protect baby’s wellbeing.
So... What’s Right for You?
The truth is, every newborn photography style has its beauty. It depends on your comfort level, your schedule, your aesthetic—and the story you want to tell.
But if you’re dreaming of soft textures, serene colors, sweet snuggles, and polished portraits that look like they belong in a magazine (or your nursery wall)... a posed newborn session might just be the perfect fit.
And lucky for you—I know a photographer 😉
Let’s create something beautiful together.

When Should I Book My Newborn Session? Your guide to capturing those first fleeting days | Newborn Photographer - Parker, CO.
Bringing a new baby into the world is one of life’s most beautiful, emotional experiences—and it goes by in a blur. You blink, and suddenly those tiny toes aren’t so tiny anymore. That’s why many parents turn to newborn photography to freeze this moment in time. But when should you actually book your newborn session?
Bringing a new baby into the world is one of life’s most beautiful, emotional experiences—and it goes by in a blur. You blink, and suddenly those tiny toes aren’t so tiny anymore. That’s why many parents turn to newborn photography to freeze this moment in time. But when should you actually book your newborn session?
The short answer: Before baby arrives.
At Nicola Jane Photography, I recommend booking your newborn session during your second trimester—ideally between 20–30 weeks of pregnancy. This gives you plenty of time to secure a spot on my calendar and plan your session without the stress of last-minute scheduling.
Why book early?
Limited Availability:
I only take on a small number of newborns each month (just six!) to ensure each family gets the time, care, and attention they deserve. Booking early guarantees your spot, even if baby comes early or late.Planning with Peace of Mind:
Once you’re booked, I pencil in your due date and reserve space around it. Then, once baby arrives, we’ll choose the exact date together—usually within the first 5–14 days when babies are still sleepy, snuggly, and love being curled up.Styling and Preparation:
Booking ahead also gives us time to chat about your style preferences, colors you love, props you want to incorporate, and how to prepare. I take care of everything in-studio—you just bring the baby, and I’ll take care of the rest.
But what if baby’s already here?
If you’ve already had your baby and didn’t get a chance to book, don’t worry! Reach out as soon as you can. While most of my sessions are pre-scheduled, I occasionally have last-minute availability or may be able to fit you in for a slightly older newborn session.
The magic is in the moment.
Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, this chapter is worth remembering. Those tiny fingers, the flaky skin, the way they fit perfectly in your arms—these are the details that matter most.
If you’re expecting and thinking about newborn photos, now is the time. I’d be honored to help you preserve these precious memories forever.

Why Tummy Time Photos Are the Perfect Way to Capture Your Baby’s First Big Milestone | Nicola Jane Photography – Parker, CO
Milestone sessions are some of the most joyful to photograph, and this little guy brought all the charm (and then some) to his tummy time photo shoot at my Parker, CO studio!
Tummy time sessions typically take place when babies are around 3–5 months old—strong enough to hold up their heads, push up on their arms, and flash those irresistible smiles. It's such a sweet window of time where babies are just starting to interact with the world around them in new, expressive ways.
This little one was an absolute superstar. He rocked his earthy green overalls, coordinated perfectly with a soft olive backdrop that let those adorable cheeks and bright eyes shine. We kept things simple and soft—just baby, a few cozy props, and a whole lot of personality.
Why I love tummy time sessions:
They celebrate big developmental leaps—like head control and upper body strength.
Babies are generally super smiley at this stage and love interaction.
You get a gallery full of timeless, natural portraits before the crawling chaos begins!
We even got some adorable shots with him sitting snugly in a basket (with supervision of course!)—a sweet little nod to how much he's already grown in just a few short months.
These sessions are short, sweet, and full of personality. If your baby is between newborn and sitter stage, tummy time photos are the perfect in-between to document those first real expressions, strong little arms, and belly-laugh moments.
📍 Sessions take place in my cozy in-home studio in Parker, CO. All props and styling are provided—you just bring the baby!

Older newborn session - Newborn Photographer, Parker, CO.
Why It’s Absolutely OK to Do an Older Newborn Session
As a newborn photographer, I often hear from parents who worry they've "missed the window" for newborn photos because their baby is older than two weeks. Maybe the early days were a blur (totally normal!), maybe baby arrived early or needed extra time in the hospital, or maybe it just took a little time to settle into your new routine. Whatever the reason — let me say this loud and clear:
It’s absolutely OK to do an older newborn session.
The 5–14 Day “Rule” Is Just a Guideline
Traditionally, newborn photographers recommend scheduling sessions within the first two weeks of life. That’s because during that time, babies are typically very sleepy and curled up in those womb-like poses. But here’s the truth: not every baby fits into that mold. Some babies are super sleepy at 3 weeks. Others are alert and curious from day one. Every baby is beautifully different — and so are their sessions.
What to Expect with an Older Newborn Session
If your baby is 3, 4, or even 6 weeks old, you can still get stunning images. In fact, older newborns often offer something a little different:
More eye contact – Older babies may be awake longer, giving us a chance to capture those wide-eyed, soulful looks.
Emerging personalities – You might catch those early smiles, funny expressions, or even stretches and yawns.
More flexibility with poses – While older newborns may not curl quite as tightly, we can still capture beautiful wrapped shots, parent snuggles, and lifestyle moments that feel authentic and timeless.
Every Stage Has Beauty
The early days go by so quickly, and photos are one of the best ways to preserve those tiny details — no matter what week your baby is in. Whether your little one is 10 days or 5 weeks old, what matters most is capturing this fleeting moment before it changes again. There is no "wrong" time for love-filled, meaningful photos.
Don’t Skip It — You’ll Never Regret Having the Photos
So if you’ve been putting off scheduling because your baby is past that “ideal” newborn window, here’s your gentle reminder: it’s not too late. Let’s capture your baby just as they are, right now. Because this stage — like all stages — is worth remembering. Here’s a gallery of images from a recent newborn session where baby was 4 weeks old…..
