Why It’s Absolutely OK to Do an Older Newborn Session

As a newborn photographer, I often hear from parents who worry they've "missed the window" for newborn photos because their baby is older than two weeks. Maybe the early days were a blur (totally normal!), maybe baby arrived early or needed extra time in the hospital, or maybe it just took a little time to settle into your new routine. Whatever the reason — let me say this loud and clear:

It’s absolutely OK to do an older newborn session.

The 5–14 Day “Rule” Is Just a Guideline

Traditionally, newborn photographers recommend scheduling sessions within the first two weeks of life. That’s because during that time, babies are typically very sleepy and curled up in those womb-like poses. But here’s the truth: not every baby fits into that mold. Some babies are super sleepy at 3 weeks. Others are alert and curious from day one. Every baby is beautifully different — and so are their sessions.

What to Expect with an Older Newborn Session

If your baby is 3, 4, or even 6 weeks old, you can still get stunning images. In fact, older newborns often offer something a little different:

  • More eye contact – Older babies may be awake longer, giving us a chance to capture those wide-eyed, soulful looks.

  • Emerging personalities – You might catch those early smiles, funny expressions, or even stretches and yawns.

  • More flexibility with poses – While older newborns may not curl quite as tightly, we can still capture beautiful wrapped shots, parent snuggles, and lifestyle moments that feel authentic and timeless.

Every Stage Has Beauty

The early days go by so quickly, and photos are one of the best ways to preserve those tiny details — no matter what week your baby is in. Whether your little one is 10 days or 5 weeks old, what matters most is capturing this fleeting moment before it changes again. There is no "wrong" time for love-filled, meaningful photos.

Don’t Skip It — You’ll Never Regret Having the Photos

So if you’ve been putting off scheduling because your baby is past that “ideal” newborn window, here’s your gentle reminder: it’s not too late. Let’s capture your baby just as they are, right now. Because this stage — like all stages — is worth remembering. Here’s a gallery of images from a recent newborn session where baby was 4 weeks old…..
