Happy New Year - 2020

What's new in 2020?

When a new year arrives, it natural for us all to reflect on the past year and set goals for the year ahead.

Last year I had a fantastic year! My main goal was to be able to put some money aside to take my family on holiday. Thanks to your support, I was able to take a break and take my boys to California for Fall break!! It was their first time at the beach and I treasured every moment.

Last year was a good year for giving back too. I love to support local schools and was able to donate sessions and packages to a handful of schools in my area. In addition to that, I had a wonderful time at the puppy mini sessions, raising money and awareness to 'Hope for Paws Colorado'.

This year, I would like to do MORE, so if you have a charity or organization that you would like to raise funds for, contact me and let's work together!

Stay in school!!
Last year the stars aligned and MY favorite photographer came to Colorado to give a workshop. Well come on...how could I not go?! It was magnificent to be in the company of some amazing newborn photographers and to learn some more tips from one of the best in the business!! Here are some of the images from that day (posing by Amy McDaniel of Dewdrops photography, edits by Nicola Jane Photography):

Goals for 2020
The biggest challenge for me over the past couple of years has been keeping on top of managing the business and delivering galleries in a timely manner whilst being a one-girl-show! There is a LOT to do behind the scenes, and I am slowly figuring out how to make things go a little smoother. Last year, I spent a great deal of time figuring out different systems to make communications, bookings and payments more automated and this has helped considerably! However, there are certain things like editing that there is no short cut for and I'm a perfectionist when it comes to this!! So my main goal for this year is to continue with tightening things up, to allow me more time for editing and get your galleries to you faster! Pinky promise!

I have big dreams again for NJP this year, and I am truly grateful for all the support and referrals I get! I LOVE my job! I get to cuddle tiny babies and capture the precious moments in your lives! Thank you for letting me do what I love! I hope you have the most amazing year and that you get to find happiness in all your days too. Here's to a great year!

Sales sessions demystified!

8/25/2017

Sales sessions are the ugly but necessary side of Nicola Jane Photography! While I would much rather spend all my time with my little clients and create beautiful pictures for their big people, each month I keep getting these annoying bills that I have to pay! Yes, NJP is a business! Gosh darn it! This is not my favorite part of the 'job'! Over the years I have tried several different approaches with pricing all the while trying to keep you, my amazing clients, in mind! Because, let's be honest, if you're not happy, then NJP cannot exist (*insert very sad, pouty face here!*), but if I cannot pay those pesky bills, then NJP also cannot exist! What a pickle!

2017 has brought about some BIG changes in the way I have delivered image galleries with the introduction of in-person sales sessions. After your session I will meet with you again to take a look through your gallery together, talking through all the different ways you can display your images and what works best for your budget. Wait! Did I just say DISPLAY images?!! Yes!! So many of us are guilty of purchasing digital images and never printing them out to enjoy! Are you guilty?! I know I might be a bit biased, but having pictures of my family on my walls makes me very happy! You might have seen this one of my son hanging in the studio:
Picture
I have also done a LOT of research to find the best products to offer you from quality prints, canvases, float wraps, metal prints, image blocks, albums and more. I have samples of everything for you to look at, take off the walls and put to the test! There are so many options for you, and I will be there to help you with the process. But don't worry, I still have digitals for you to purchase! I know that these are valuable too, and I have broken these down into different sized packages so that you can buy only what you need! My goal is that you leave my studio happy with your purchases, that maybe you have spoiled yourself with a little bit of something special, but that you have purchased EXACTLY what you want and not just a cookie cutter package. So come on in, take a look, ask questions...let's make something beautiful together!

PHOTO PRINT COMPARISON

2/17/2017

"Where is the best place to have my images printed?"

Well, this is a question I hear often so I thought I would take some time to help give you an informed answer! You may think that my opinion is biased, and truthfully it is because this is something that matters to me! Why go to the expense of having beautiful pictures taken only to end up with poor prints hanging on your wall that you are not happy with? So, I ordered prints from some of the most popular photo labs to see how they compared....
Picture
Here is the original image. This was produced from the print lab that I prefer to use, WHCC. My monitor is calibrated to their printer, which means the prints I receive are printed to the EXACT colors that I see on my monitor. Now, take a look at the rest. Some of them were pretty close....some of them were not....!
Picture
The results were shocking! Let me break it down....
Picture
The print from Costco had more red tones in it compared to the original.
Picture
The print from Snapfish was more yellow with less contrast than the original.
Picture
The print from Walmart had lots of darks and more magenta tones that the original.
Picture
The print from Walgreens came out more green than the original and was also over-sharpened.
Picture
The print from Target came out very yellow, it lacked contrast and was over-sharpened.
Picture
The print from Shutterfly was more orange than the original and lacked contrast.

So as you can see, not all printers are the same! That is not to say you can't get your images printed at any of these places! I honestly get my Christmas cards printed at Costco! Why? Because it's affordable, quick and let's face it, they're going to end up in the recycling pile in a couple of weeks! However, the 20x24 prints that I have hanging around my house I have professional printed, because I look at them EVERY day...my visitors look at them... and ok, I might be a bit OCD when it comes to this stuff!!

"But, your prints are expensive!"

Yes, it's true! Ordering prints from any professional is going to be more expensive. Getting your hair done at a salon is more expensive than doing your hair yourself! You get the point! Here's the reason why... professional print companies are held to a higher standard..it's what they do! They are committed to providing reliable, high quality products. They check their ink settings to make sure that each and every one of their printers are printing correctly so you can get the same print over and over again. Other companies do not do this! I could reorder the same print again and get different results.

Now, this post is not intended to reprimand you!! Heck, I'm just happy if you PRINT your images!! The purpose of this is just to inform you of the results I found! My greatest fear as a photographer is that you print your images and hate the picture you look at every day which results in your lack of trust in my work. I aim to provide you with a service that is consistent and high quality and I hope that keeps you coming back time after time, because I truly love capturing images for you! It is also for this reason that this year I have changed my approach to ordering products. I will now be offering you a variety of packages at your in-person sales appointment to get the exact product that fits YOU.

If you have any comments or questions, please let me know! I'd love to hear from you!!

P.S. I will keep these photos at the studio for you to take a look at!

Buying Guide, the top three products you have to have!

So you've had your photo session, now what...?! Well, it's time to get those images printed. But that's not an easy task! As a photographer myself, even I have a difficult time deciding what to print after having our family portraits.... YES, I do hire a professional photographer!

Like most people, I love every image in my gallery and so these are NJP's must have products...

Number 1 ~ A BIG canvas.
I always suggest about 1-3 LARGE canvases or LARGE framed prints if you prefer. I have in the past been too conservative and bought a smaller canvas, and I have ALWAYS regretted it. My advice, if you have the room, go BIG! It always looks nice to have at least one BIG picture, which you can then accentuate with smaller prints.

Number 2 ~ A session album.

This is an affordable way to print ALL your favorite images. I know that with my little ones being so young that my displays will change throughout the years. However, I want to be able to look back on each session, remember the memories and see my family’s growth. SO I ALWAYS GET A SESSION ALBUM. They are the perfect way to beautifully display your memories, but they can be stored easily on a shelf or table without taking up too much space.
Picture

Number 3 ~ Birth Announcements.

If you've just had a baby you obviously want to share the news with everyone! Birth announcements are an obvious choice. To this day, I still have a framed birth announcement in each of my boys' rooms. Today, there are just SO many options to choose from.

If you are unsure what to buy after your session,  just ask!!! Your photographer can help you decide what will work best to fill your home with beautiful images of your loved ones. It can help to send your photographer images of the wall space in your home. This will give them a better idea of what images will display best depending on the size and color of your space. If your budget is limited then definitely go for one large print and a session album – you’ll have the best of both worlds.

2014 has already brought exciting changes to Nicola Jane Photography!

Firstly, the website has been under construction and now displays up-to-date images and MUCH more information than before.

Secondly, after listening to clients and MANY hours of consideration and work, I have finalized my pricing guide for 2014. It is now a combination of what I love, what clients have been asking for and some of my popular items.

And so this leads me into my VERY exciting news.....I am now thrilled to offer you AMAZING quality frames from Organic Bloom. Seriously, the quality knocks my socks off!! There are so many colors and styles to choose from which really takes your images to a whole new level! I have been busy redecorating my studio with these frames and I would be happy for you to come and take a look!

Thank you to everyone who has given me support and advice in making these changes and I look forward to capturing more memories in 2014.
